The Stooges, also known as Iggy and the Stooges, are an American proto-punk band from Ann Arbor, Michigan formed in 1967 (originally as “The Psychedelic Stooges”) and were active until 1974 when they disbanded. They later reunited during 2003. Although they didn’t sell many records in their original form and often performed to indifferent audiences, The Stooges are regarded widely as instrumental in the development of punk rock, as well as influential to alternative rock, heavy metal music and rock music at large. During the late 60s and early 70s, the group were an underground sensation, yet the band did not break into the mainstream. Following three albums, The Stooges disbanded but the group’s legacy grew over the next two decades, as many underground bands used their sludgy grind as a foundation for a variety of indie rock styles and Iggy Pop became a pop culture icon. The Stooges were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them 78th on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.
