The Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era’s most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors, spreading their message of peace, love and mind expansion across the globe through the best part of three decades. The object of adoration for popular music’s most fervent and celebrated fan-following, they were the ultimate cult band. The Dead became superstars solely on their own terms with their devoted fans known as Deadheads. The Grateful Dead were founded in the San Francisco Bay Area amid the rise of the counterculture of the 1960s. The founding members were Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals), Bob Weir (guitar, vocals), Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (keyboards, harmonica, vocals), Phil Lesh (bass, vocals) and Bill Kreutzmann (drums). The band were ranked 57th by Rolling Stone magazine in its The Greatest Artists of all Time issue. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Grateful Dead have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide.
